Baby Teeth : A Novel
By: Zoje Stage
Hardcover, 304 pages
Format read: e-book from my local library
Dates read: 31 Aug 2018 – 21 Sept 2018
Sweetness can be deceptive.
Meet Hanna.
She’s the sweet-but-silent angel in the adoring eyes of her Daddy. He’s the only person who understands her, and all Hanna wants is to live happily ever after with him. But Mommy stands in her way, and she’ll try any trick she can think of to get rid of her. Ideally for good.
Meet Suzette.
She loves her daughter, really, but after years of expulsions and strained home schooling, her precarious health and sanity are weakening day by day. As Hanna’s tricks become increasingly sophisticated, and Suzette’s husband remains blind to the failing family dynamics, Suzette starts to fear that there’s something seriously wrong, and that maybe home isn’t the best place for their baby girl after all.
This was seriously one messed up book…. but in a good way. I anticipated it would be a pretty screwed up book from the summary, but this totally blew my mind. Every time I thought things would take a turn for the better, it got even more messed up.
Honestly, Hanna reminds me of Stewie from Family Guy with her infatuation of “taking care” (a.k.a plotting the demise) of her mother, except maybe even more diabolical. The book rotates between Hanna and Suzette’s points of view so it was interesting to see both sides of the relationship as different events unfolded.
It was slightly annoying to see Hanna’s father’s (Alex) obliviousness to the situation that was developing at home although it is understandable that most parents only want to believe the best about their children.
Overall, I enjoyed reading this book. I found the plot enjoyable and even gasped out loud at the ending. This book definitely put having children into perspective and has seriously made me question whether I want children in the future now lol. I think this book should be required reading for junior high and high school students because I guarantee it would be a more effective form of birth control than condoms and the pill!
It was hard to pour endless love into someone who wouldn’t love you back. No one could do it forever
“We had an accident–‘
Suzette cut Alex off. ‘Hanna’s trying to kill me.”
The baby wasn’t supposed to remind her of an internal mass of pooling waste.

I totes agree on the similarity with Need to Talk About Kevin. Both with the annoyingly oblivious fathers…
I’m really curious what the author’s next book will be, cuz Baby Teeth was pretty awesome 😀
